Is Sonic Generations (2011) worth your time?
As if you didn’t know, I am a Sonic the Hedgehog enjoyer, and one of my favourite mainline games is the OG Generations (2011) which is what we’ll be looking at and seeing if it’s worth the money and your time
This review is not biased by any means, this is purely my own opinion/s and more or less my interpretation so feel free to share your own.
Again, I am a causal enjoyer of this game, I do not expect to eventually reach a high play time or anything of that matter, and I have a sub-20hr play time, at 19.1 clocked in over 4 months from September 2025 - January 2026. With these disclaimers out of the way, Take my lead, I’ll set you free.
One of the main things I love the stage choices, however I do believe they did use a fair bit of stages, using the city motif, a few dozen ton of times, but that’s up to your own interpretation. I also love the games length, but the story is a detractor in my opinion because it’s very raw and lighthearted, it often seems like it directly detracts from the games it’s genuinely celebrating. but you can play Shadow campaign on Shadow Generations which I’ve recently got into, so I won’t be dropping spoilers until I’ve finished the game or I feel it’s at a good point to. But to let the people that want to know, intro story is PEAK cinema.
Another thing I love about it is how much modding potential it has, I’ve dipped my toe on UnleashedRecomp modding, review/guide coming soon. And it’s such a good way to mod a game and perverse the core parts of a genuinely good game.
The last point I want to make is you can’t buy the game on its own anymore because of delisting back in September 2024, but you can buy it with a £60 bundle, which it may be different due to Steam/Sega sales and currency exchange rates.
To make a long review short, I’d recommend it, it’s not perfect, but not many games are
PS, I am working on Ideas for the 35th anniversary celebrations dropping sometime this year, EG June, as I do need to do some of my research.
