Was Sonic Forces hate forced or was it just misperceived? GromitFoxZero Game Reviews, #1.
Sonic Forces and Sonic 06, both two different games but very similarly received, Sonic 06 was such a disasterus train wreck and it really should have been the point they said, here lies Sonic. but two years later, Unleashed was a similar bag but in 2026, retrospective appeal has been kind to Unleashed especially with the recompile that got released in 2025, install guide coming soon, but back in 2008, IGN and people were NOT kind to Unleashed, it was pretty well received for the daytime stages, even so nearly 18 years later some stages have not been topped and the SPEED is something else, but the night time stages effectually being dubbed as “the were-hog stages” bring it down significantly though, as it often took over 20-25 minutes to complete some stages, I mean heck Eggmanland takes over 35 minutes to beat and plus the other stages too.
It would follow a loop like this until 2011, when Sonic Generations released for PC, Xbox 360, PS3, DS and it was very much positive as they had trimmed the fat out of Unleashed in Sonic Colours (2010, Wii), then in around 2013, Nintendo secured a deal with SEGA to release the next couple of Sonic games only on the Wii U, which is an absolute failure of a console.
Now we arrive at 2017s Mania, which in many Sonic fans eyes, was a step in the right direction, and coming off the back of the Boom trilogy, which was so bad that one reviewer in 2015 said “It’s more like an unfinished beta version accidentally pressed onto a disc and shipped to stores.” BlazeHedgehog, BLTN Videogames #11, in November 2017 they released Forces as a main line title, and guess how long it took to be succeed by Frontiers, 1 year?, 2 years?. It was FIVE years, yes you heard me right, FIVE years of silence from the games.
Getting onto my review, I have gotten up to Stage 15-17 as of which I last played around a week or two before writing this review and I am not BIASED by any means whatsoever.
I really do think the story is quite strong in terms of content and they did release an EPISODE SHADOW which I’ve yet to play, I will write a follow up for that, and the character creation mechanic is quite unique,
One thing that shoots it down though is how grindy and repetitive it seems, also the price point isn’t really the best for a 8 YEAR OLD game, especially on Steam at least here in the UK. £34.99 for a game that is 8 years old as of writing is a JOKE.
Well, I guess this is the end of the review, if anything comes up I’ll edit this with my thoughts.
